Upcoming activities

Speakers, orientation, thesis prep, OR Instructor of the Year

Description

- Host a social activity to introduce the incoming Graduate class to the senior Graduate class (Fall)

- Give several orientation briefings to incoming Graduate class designed to introduce INFORMS and the potential benefits of membership

- Host several speakers a year in the area of Operations Research and/or military analysis for the PhD seminar

Most important and successful activities:

- Students only meeting with new graduate class designed as a question and answer forum about the school, faculty, and program. Students from the senior class give insight and answers based on their experiences (and those of their classmates). Scheduled for early January 2003.

- Thesis preparation meeting. Like the previous activity, this is designed as a students only version of what it takes to succeed with the thesis effort. This is done in the late winter/early spring as the faculty members are presenting their research to the students. The forum allows senior students to give insight into the styles and expectations of the various faculty members allowing the students to find good matches for their personalities. Scheduled for early March 2003.

We sponsor an OR Instructor of the Year award given by the student chapter and voted on by the graduating members. This is a very popular activity, and I've been told that the faculty recipients appreciate the recognition.

Upcoming activities

Brown bag program, weekly film series, TGIFs, Chicago

Description

Our Brown Bag program is going strong, providing first-year grad students a lunch and speaker every week.  In a year, we detail the life of a grad student, discuss career opportunities, present extracurricular opportunities, and have professors detail their active research program.  We host a weekly student research seminar, giving fellow students an opportunity to present their research and polish their conference or recruiting talks (it works - recent PhDs have been hired by Rutgers, Georgia Tech, Carnegie Mellon, and UNC).  On the social side, we hold monthly TGIFs, a weekly film series, and explore the vibrant city of Chicago.  We ensure strong two-way communications between faculty and students by having members of our executive on our graduate liaison committee.

Upcoming activities

Random talk, panel discussions, IE Day, plant trip, Friday social

Description

We have a lot of social and academic events planned throughout the year. We have a social activity every Friday. These include dinners and movies, playing sports like football and volleyball, visiting a Haunted House (for Halloween), attending university and professional football and basketball games etc. We are planning an international dinner, BBQ's and a Christmas party. The main idea is to get both grad and undergrad students together in a non-academic environment. The academic activities that have been planned by the Purdue chapter of INFORMS include the following (i)Random Talk – This is a biweekly student seminar series focusing on issues related to probability modeling. Graduate students from various departments across campus (e.g. Engineering, Statistics, Management) are given an opportunity to speak about their research. This semester, the chapter has scheduled more than six student speakers. In addition, plans are being made to invite a few external speakers. (ii)Panel Discussions – The chapter plans to hold at least one panel discussion that will debate important issues in operations research from a deterministic and a stochastic perspective. The panel will consist of four to six professors selected from various departments. (iii)IE Day – This event is aimed at encouraging interaction between different areas in Industrial Engineering (IE). One possibility is a poster session for graduate students from different areas in IE. (iv)Plant Trip- We are planning a visit in early November to a nearby distribution center.

Upcoming activities

Welcome picnic, boat race

Description

This Fall quarter the chapter has showcased its work at a university-wide student activity fair, recruiting new members and increasing INFORMS awareness on campus.

The chapter also organizes and hosts biweekly research presentations that we call “Brown Bag Research Talks”, since participants bring their own lunch. The format of these talks provides an opportunity for advanced doctoral students to present their research or for advisors to discuss the frontiers of their research areas.

Geared towards undergrads, the chapter also hosts the popular ‘Lunch with your Prof’ and ‘Corporate Night’ events.

The largest event for this Fall quarter is the ‘2nd Annual INFORMS Welcome Picnic and Boat Race’. This is a social event targeted at giving (new and continuing) students a chance to get to know INFORMS better, have a fun time, and hopefully recruit new members. This year’ motto is “So much fun your face will be stuck in a smile!”. As part of the event, there is a boat race where teams of students, faculty and staff compete in racing radio-controlled model boats in a pond on campus. Prizes are given out to the winning teams.

Through these events, the Stanford INFORMS student chapter executive team hopes to continue to provide value for its members and the community, while at the same time increasing membership and name recognition.

Upcoming activities Conference visits, development of future projects

Description

The Informs student chapter at USMA is composed entirely of undergraduate students and currently has 53 members. The focus of the program is to expose students to high-quality work in Operations Research and Systems Engineering/Engineering Management in both business and military related applications, and to provide a mechanism for cadets to interact socially with professionals in these fields. As such, our main activities for Academic Year 03 are attendance at the Army Operations Research Society Symposium in October 02, a tailgate for the Army-Air Force game in Nov 02, and attendance at the INFORMS national meeting in San Jose in Nov 02 where we have 7 students presenting work. Following each conference attendees will present observations to the group and make recommendations on future attendance. In the spring of this year we will spend time developing potential projects for future presentations and the pairing of students up with faculty advisors for those projects, with a goal of increasing the number of presentations at the AORS and INFORMS fall conferences in 03 in order to gain more experience for the cadets.

Upcoming activities

Student presentations, panel discussions

Description

We have launched a series of student presentations this semester with an outstanding 10 scheduled talks. The presentations are given to the body of graduate students, with the aim of providing a "low-stress" opportunity to practice presentation skills. Several of the speakers are practicing talks to be given at the Informs meeting in San Jose. Additionally, we are planning a panel discussion in which graduate students may ask questions of faculty regarding the art and practice of research in the university setting. Two events that the chapter holds annually are (1)a panel discussion for first year students by "senior students" in the first few weeks of classes, and (2) a panel in the spring during which newer PhD students get to hear the senior students' perspective on the qualifying and preliminary exam experiences. These two events aim to help ease the transitions that graduate students face in their first few semesters in the programs
