EDITORIAL
Spring
has Sprung!
This
issue marks the end of another academic year, and what an
interesting year it has been for the OR/MS Community. In the
fall, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first national
meeting and first journal publication of the Operations Research
Society of America. This year, we've also seen an influx in
the student involvement in INFORMS with creation of several
new chapters (see the chapter spotlight) and a record number
of students attending the fall meeting in San Jose.
OR/MS
Tomorrow also had a great year. Our readership and visibility
increased considerably. Based on our survey feedback, we learned
88% found the overall content valuable, 67% preferred the
Features section, and 78% would recommend the magazine to
your fellow students. Visually, the newsletter has undergone
a couple of facelifts. In this issue, we are pleased to welcome
our Editorial Board, a group of five graduate students members
whose job it is to guide the content of the issue, as well
as judge our student paper competition.
In
the survey, you asked for more student content. In this edition,
we congratulate the winners of our student paper competition,
Jianghua Wu in the Graduate Division and Victor Nemchenok
in the Undergraduate Division, and present several honorable
mentions as well.
The colors of the issues (Old Gold and Black) are those of
Purdue Univeristy, the school of our Graduate Division Winner.
Spring
is the time several of our student members graduate and begin
making their way into the work place. If you are still on
the job market, why not check out our cool job posting at
Caleb Technologies. Or if you have an entrepreneurial spirit,
you might want to follow in the footsteps of Carrie Beam,
a 1999 graduate from Berkeley who started her own consulting
business.
We
ask as you embark on your journey into the 'real world' and
beyond, please do not forget OR/MS Tomorrow. Encourage your
students to get involved!
Congratulations
and Best of Luck,
Anne,
Menkes, and Aditya
